KVCR area has a wide range of Avifauna in a study conducted by ornithologists Adv. Namasivayam and Sri.P.K.Uthaman, 135 species of birds has been identified from the area. Most of the identified bird species are migratory. Dr. Salim Ali and Prof. Neelakandan have detected 11 species of migratory birds in Kerala and all of them are found in Kadalundi.
Some of the species of migratory birds seen in the area are Sandwitch Tern, Black headed Gull, Brown headed Gull, Red shank, Greenshank, common Sandpiper, Golden plover, Lesser Sand plover, Greater Sand plover, Whimbrel, Curlew, Open bill stork, Spoon billed Sand Piper, Sanderling, Crab plover, Black Tailed godwit, Bar tailed godwit. Mangrove forests as well as mud flats in this area are periodically visited by these migratory birds and even this estuary is used as a refueling point.
